PRICE CENTER SEEKING MOSAIC ARTIST FOR GARDEN ART BENCH
What:
The Price Center Arts Committee is seeking proposals from local mosaic artists for a new garden bench installation. The project includes three concrete benches installed in a semi-circle.
The winning artist will successfully transform them into a mosaic installation honoring the San Marcos River. Local property owner and arts supporter, Melissa Hodgkins, has provided a grant to pay the artist fee. The PC Arts Committee has purchased the three benches and will provide a materials budget.
The finished work will include a permanent plaque featuring the title of the piece, the artist’s name, and a short tribute to the donor’s deceased husband. (We will create and install after the bench is completed.)
Where:
The benches reside in the front Garden of the Price Center under the heritage Pecan. They are orientated in the Garden for a wonderful view of our front flower and sculpture garden. You will also be looking towards the new river-themed mural on the Feltner Alley wall. These benches will be the 10th permanent art installation in our Garden this year. Our goal is to grow the sculpture garden with annual celebrations, donations, and additional purchases by the Committee.
When:
The window to submit RFPs is Oct. 1- Oct. 31, 2021. Our goal is to complete the installation before the end of 2021.
Who:
Individual or a team of local mosaic artists are eligible to submit.
Why:
This shady respite in our beautiful garden will add to our permanent art collection and provide an opportunity for Melissa to honor her husband, George Forrester. The installation overlooks the couples beloved Feltner Building.
Theme:
The bench design should honor our river, a favorite of George’s. The three benches provide an opportunity for a triptych or one continuous design.
Abstract. . . realistic. . . a focus on the flora and fauna. . . a look at the river yesterday, today, and tomorrow. . . a tribute to our mermaids. . . the ideas are limitless, and all are welcome!
How:
The PC Arts Committee will review the RFPs and select the winning design for installation. A $1,200 will be awarded to the successful applicant and an additional $300 materials budget will be provided. The completed work needs to be smooth to allow for comfortable seating, feature acrylic grout, and be sealed and ready for years of use outdoor.
Specifications:
The three individual benches are made of concrete and have a slightly beveled edge. The curved tops measure 47” x 16.” The mosaic work should sit on the top of bench only. It’s up to individual artist if they want to keep or mosaic the beveled edge.
The benches have not yet been permanently assembled so you could work on them in your studio or on-site in the Garden. (Our preference for the visual appeal of watching the process.)
Submissions:
Please submit your proposal, including renderings, sample materials, and photos of any finished examples of similar work to:
