PRICE CENTER ISSUES RFP FOR NEW ART GARDEN TABLES

The Price Center Arts Committee is seeking proposals from local artists to transform new permanent seating in the front garden of the Center. The new seating will serve gatherings, performances, and daily visitors to the garden. One of the two heritage pecans provides shade for the space afternoons and early evenings.

The winning artist or artists will successfully transform the two 8’ tables and benches into engaging and functional works of art. The design may be as a pair or two separate concepts. The PC Arts Committee has purchased the furniture and will prime it before and seal it afterward.

You may submit to transform one or both tables. We may not necessarily choose the same artist for both pieces.

Where:

Two large, heavy-duty, outdoor, wooden picnic tables and benches will be installed in front of the main entrance ramp at the Center under one of two heritage Pecans. They are orientated in the Garden for a wonderful view of our front flower and art garden, our river-themed mosaic benches, and the mural on the Feltner Alley wall. These benches will join more than a dozen permanent art installations in our Garden -- a Certified Sustainable Habitat – as recently designated by the City of San Marcos.

When:

The window to submit RFPs is Aug. 1- Aug. 31. The benches must cure outside before priming. Work likely won’t begin before Oct. 1.  The project is to be completed before the end of 2024.

Who:

Individuals or a team of local artists are eligible to submit.

Why:

This shady respite in our beautiful garden will add to our permanent art collection.

Theme:

The winning design should fit into our garden's overall aesthetic. The two tables and benches could be designed as one larger piece or individually. Abstract. . . realistic. . . a focus on the flora and fauna. . . the river. . . our history . . .  our mermaids. . . the ideas are limitless, and all are welcome!

How:

The PC Arts Committee will review the RFPs and select the winning design for installation. A $1,000 will be awarded to the successful applicant for both tables or $500 to each artist for individual designs. An additional $300 materials budget will be provided. ($150/table). The completed work needs to be outdoor-friendly and feature a smooth finish to allow for comfortable seating.

Specifications:

The heavy-duty tables and benches are made of pressure-treated lumber with rust-resistant hardware. They measure 95 x 59 x 28”. We are open to total transformation or only reworking the table and bench tops.

The benches will be installed and placed in the garden to cure, and then be primed before the artist’s transformation. We will also handle sealing your finished project.
